| Census 2011 – India’s Population Dropping |
![]() This year from February 9 till February 28, the Census 2011 embarked across the country with 1.2 billion population, covering 6.40 lakh villages across 35 states and Union Territories..Census 2011 has finally revealed some interesting facts about the growth of India's population.
It has been found to decrease by over five per cent. In Census 2001 (1991-2001), the population growth was estimated 21.5 per cent. Census 2011 (2001-2011) revealed the growth of population to 16 per cent only. In the Census 2011, the population was expected to be around the 1.2 billion mark. In a report, Registrar General and Census Commissioner C Chandramouli commented that the younger population was expected to grow at a handsome rate. Based on Census 2001 (1991-2001) population above 18 years was estimated to grow at 28.8 per cent in Census 2011. Post enumeration, it was seen that 1 or 2 per cent population was left out in Census. In Census 1981 the omission rate was 1.8 per cent, followed by 1.7 per cent in Census 1991 and 2.3 per cent in Census 2001. In Census 2011, for the first time three options was introduced under the ‘Gender’ column. Apart from the 'Male' and 'Female' column, 'Other' category was also inserted. Apart from that houseless people was covered in Census 2011. NGOs helped in covering people who do not have houses. There have been both economic and population growth in Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. The reason for decreasing population trends was because more Indians are having fewer children for maintaining better quality of life. Over last decade, Indian economy has grown over 8% a year on an average. More people have been successful in getting employments, job and a better lifestyle compared to the previous decade. Economic factor has strongly affected the people's expectations and aspirations and has ultimately led to slower growth in future population. The Census 2011 revealed that the literacy gap between the males and females has been narrowed by 16.6 %. In fact , females literacy rate has rose to the to the extent of 12 points while as males in literacy segment has rose to the extent of 7 points only. Women from rural pockets of the country are getting trained on employability skills to make themselves economically productive and employable. |
